A lovely blog called The Well-Read Wife recently ran a contest raising money for The Trevor Project. (If you’ve never heard of The Trevor Project, they are a foundation that provides a 24-hour suicide prevention hotline for LGBT youth.) The Well-Read Wife donated $200 to the project when her post reached one hundred comments, plus she gave copies of Dan Savage’s It Gets Better book to five lucky commenters. And I was one of them!
The “It Gets Better Project” began as an online campaign in response to the rash of LGBT teen suicides last summer. Beginning with a simple video posted by Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller to show young gay people that life does in fact get better, the project exploded into thousands of responses from LGBT identified-persons and allies. The book is a written collection of these stories.

Many thanks to The Well-Read Wife! When I get the book I will be sure to review it for you all.
Have you heard about the It Gets Better Project? Which are your favorite videos? Have you read the book?
Congrats for winning the book! It sounds comforting in theory.
I wonder, though, does it truly get better? LGBT folks are still bullied as adults and some of us are even killed. We are discriminated against by our government, our workplaces, and our families. Is this truly better?
I agree with you re: “It gets better” being a flawed statement. You are right – for many people it doesn’t get better. However, I think the message is one of hope for those who are close to ending their lives. This is always a good thing, I think!
